The squad program provides further advancement through stroke correction
and increased fitness.
Pre-Squad and Junior Squad run for 45 minutes, minimum attendance is 1
session a week, however children are encouraged to attend more often.
Discounted lesson prices are offered for squad swimmers who attend multiple
sessions a week.
Swimmers in Pre-Squad and Junior
Squad aim to complete the certificates of,
· Octopus (250m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 10 min treading
water, 25m butterfly, reach rescue, water safety project).
· Whale (400m freestyle, 100m IM, 15 min treading water with
clothes on, and underwater fly kick for 6m)
These levels continue to
develop and refine the skills taught as part of our learn
to swim program. Each certificate at this level takes a minimum of 2 terms
to complete.
Intermediate squad sessions
run for 1 hour, with swimmers attempting to complete the Shark and Marlin certificates.
Terms 1 and 3, students train for and complete the 50m Challenge. The 50m
Challenge is designed to introduce squad swimmers to competition swimming
by timing their freestyle over 50m.
Certificates available are; less
than 60 seconds, 50 seconds, 45 seconds, 40 seconds, 35 seconds and 30
seconds.
Term 2 and 4, students complete the more advanced certificates of;
· Shark (1km continuous freestyle),
· Marlin (1.5km freestyle swim, 30
min treading water, 200 IM, non contact rescues, 25m sidestroke, 12m
under-water fly kick, 100m butterfly)
Senior squad is open to those
swimmers who have completed the Marlin award, with training sessions
running for 1 hour. Senior squad follows a similar program of fitness and
stroke correction to the Intermediate squad, however during terms 2 and 4 swimmers
are invited to take the Bulleen or Camberwell Challenge and complete a
continuous freestyle swim of 3km or more.
Certificates, t-shirts and trophies are presented at the twice-yearly
awards night to swimmers who complete the Marlin award or higher. Awards
nights are an opportunity for swimmers and their families to celebrate
their achievements and socialize away from the pool. The highlight of our
awards night is an appearance from a surprise guest speaker. Past speakers
have included:
- Brooke
Hanson
- Danni
Miatke, and
- Nicole
Livingston
Squad swimmers are also given
the opportunity to participate in competitive Relay Days organized by the
Swim School Owners Association. These days are designed to introduce
children to competitive swimming in a fun environment. All swimmers will
receive show-bags for their participation and ribbons and medals can be won
for individual and team performances.
